Thank-you messages after the wedding: for guests, gifts, blessings and the people who helped

The wedding is over, the house is full of half-finished mithai boxes, and three hundred people deserve a thank-you. Here is how to send them without it taking a month, with messages in English and Hindi you can copy.

Indian weddings make the Western thank-you card awkward. Most gifts arrive as shagun envelopes, many blessings come from people who never attended, and half the guests were your parents' guests, not yours. The advice below is written for that.

When to send them, and who sends what

Within two weeks, while the wedding is still fresh in everyone's mind. A thank-you three months later reads like an afterthought, though a late one is still better than none.

Who thanks whom

For guests who came

The best thank-you names one specific thing: that they travelled from another city, that they danced at the sangeet, that they stayed until the vidaai. One line of detail makes a template sound personal, and it is the line people remember.

If someone came but did not bring a gift, thank them for coming and nothing else. There is nothing to mention and nothing to explain.

For gifts and shagun

Thank people for their blessing and their generosity, never for the amount. Naming the sum turns a blessing into a transaction, and naming one person's sum in a family group is worse.

  • For shagun or a cash envelope: thank them for their blessings and their generosity.
  • For a gift you can name: name it, and say how you will use it. 'The dinner set is already on our table' beats 'thank you for the lovely gift'.
  • For jewellery or gold from close family: a call first, then a photo of it being worn, if it was.
  • If you asked for no gifts and they brought one anyway: accept it warmly and thank them like anyone else. Our page on no gifts wording covers how to ask in the first place.

For blessings from people who could not come

Relatives abroad, an elder who was unwell, a friend with a newborn: they often send the warmest messages of all. Thank them, tell them they were missed, and send them something of the day, a photo or the invitation link, so they can see what they missed. For family abroad, send it in their morning, not yours. There is more on family overseas in wedding invitations for guests abroad.

From the parents

The parents' thank-you messages are usually more formal, and in many families in Hindi. They thank the guests for their presence and for blessing the couple, and they sign off as the family. There are more Hindi messages, thank-yous included, on a page of their own.

For the people who made it happen

The cousin who managed the cars, the friends who choreographed the sangeet, the neighbour who lent the terrace, the decorator who stayed up till three in the morning. Each of them deserves a message of their own that names what they did. For vendors you were happy with, a short note, and a review where they ask for one, is the thank-you that helps them most.

Sharing the photos and the invitation again

An Invifest invitation link has no expiry date and no yearly fee, so it keeps working after the wedding (our terms, A9). Some families send it again with their thank-you, as a keepsake: it still has the names, every function and the song.

Photos take longer. Send the thank-you now with one or two pictures, and the full album when it arrives. Do not hold the thank-you back for the album: by the time it comes, the moment has passed.

Thank-you messages you can copy

For guests who came, for gifts and shagun, for blessings from afar, from the parents, for the people who helped, and one to send with the photos. Change the words in brackets, and add the one line only you could write.

Questions people ask

When should we send thank-you messages after the wedding?

Within two weeks, while the day is still fresh. Send the message first and the photos when they are ready; do not hold the thank-you back for the album.

How do I thank someone for a cash gift or shagun?

Thank them for their blessings and their generosity, never for the amount. 'Thank you for your blessings and your generous gift' is enough, and it never embarrasses anyone in a family group.

Should the parents or the couple send thank-you messages?

Each thanks the guests they invited. The parents thank their relatives, friends and business contacts, usually more formally and often in Hindi; the couple thank their friends and colleagues. The elders on both sides get a call.

Can I send thank-you messages on WhatsApp?

Yes, and most families do. Make each one personal with the guest's name and one specific line, and call the elders instead of only messaging them.

How do I thank someone who came but did not bring a gift?

Thank them for coming, warmly, and say nothing about gifts. Their presence is what you are thanking them for.

What do I write to someone who sent a gift but could not come?

Tell them they were missed, thank them for the gift and their message, and send them something of the day, a photo or the invitation link, so they can see what they missed.

Does the invitation link still work after the wedding?

An Invifest invitation link has no expiry date and no yearly fee (Terms, A9), so you can share it again with your thank-you as a keepsake. If Invifest ever has to close, customers are told at least 90 days before and are sent a copy of their invite to keep.
