What an Anand Karaj invitation says

A Sikh wedding card opens with Ik Onkar, the One Creator, and often with a line of Gurbani or "Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh". The invitation is made with the Guru's blessing: the families invite you to the Anand Karaj, the blissful union, of their son or daughter.

The Anand Karaj is a morning ceremony in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, usually at a Gurdwara, so the card gives the Gurdwara's name and an exact time. The couple walk around the Guru Granth Sahib four times while the Laavan, the four hymns of Guru Ram Das ji, are sung. Guests are told to cover their heads, and the ceremony is followed by Guru ka Langar.

The functions on a Sikh wedding invitation

  • Roka and Kurmai (or Chunni Chadhai) - the families agree, the bride is given the chunni
  • Akhand Path or Sehaj Path - the reading of Gurbani at home before the wedding
  • Mehndi and Jaggo - the henna evening and the night procession with the lit gaggar
  • Chooda and Kaleere - the bride's red bangles and the golden ornaments tied to them
  • Milni, Ardas and Anand Karaj - the families embrace, the prayer, the four Laavan
  • Doli and Reception - the farewell, then the evening party

On a website the Gurdwara gets a map pin and a note on head covering, and the evening functions can carry their own dress codes. More in the Anand Karaj invitation guide and the Punjabi wedding invitation guide.
