What a South Indian wedding invitation says

A South Indian wedding card begins with a blessing: a Tamil card with the Pillaiyar suzhi and "Pillaiyar thunai", a Telugu card with "Sri Rastu, Subhamastu, Avighnamastu", a Kannada card with "Shubha Vivaha" and the family deity's name. Then the elders invite you to the wedding of their son or daughter, naming both families and often their native place.

The muhurtham is the most important line on the card. It is a window chosen by the astrologer, written with the date, the Tamil or Telugu month, the day, and often the nakshatra and lagnam, for example "between 9.00 am and 10.30 am". Many South Indian weddings happen early in the morning, so guests need that time exactly.

The functions, by community

  • Nichayathartham or Nischitartham - the formal engagement
  • Pellikuthuru and Pellikoduku - the Telugu bride's and groom's turmeric ceremonies
  • Janavasam or Mappillai Azhaippu - the groom is welcomed the evening before
  • Kasi Yatra and Oonjal - the mock pilgrimage and the swing (Tamil Brahmin weddings)
  • Muhurtham - Mangalya Dharanam (tying the thali), Jeelakarra Bellam and Talambralu at Telugu weddings, Dhare Herdu at Kannada ones
  • Reception - often the evening before in Tamil weddings, or after

A Malayali Hindu wedding is often short, a thali kettu in a morning muhurtham at a temple or hall, and a Telugu wedding may be at night. On a website the card can be in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam beside English. Read the guides for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam invitations.
