What a Nikah invitation says
A Muslim wedding invitation begins with the name of Allah: "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem", in Arabic script, in English letters, or both. Many families add a verse about marriage beneath it, most often Surah Ar-Rum 30:21, which names spouses among Allah's signs, created so that husband and wife find peace in each other, with affection and mercy placed between them.
The invitation is made by the parents, who request the pleasure of your company at the Nikah of their son or daughter, with the other family named in full. "Insha'Allah" usually sits beside the date, and some families give the Hijri date with the English one. The wording is warm but dignified, and it closes with a dua for the couple, such as "May Allah bless this union".
Mehndi, Nikah and Walima: who hosts what
- Manjha or Haldi and Mehndi - the bride's family's evenings before the wedding
- Baraat - the groom's family arrives
- Nikah - the contract and the consent, with the qazi and witnesses
- Rukhsati - the bride's farewell from her parents' home
- Walima - the feast given by the groom's family after the Nikah, the Sunnah way to announce the marriage
Because the Nikah is usually hosted by the bride's side and the Walima by the groom's, many families send two invitations with different hosts and different guest lists. One website can carry every function, or each side can have its own link with its own names. See the Nikah invitation wording guide and the Walima invitation guide.
