How to say 'no gifts' on an Indian wedding invitation, politely

More families now want to say 'no gifts', and almost every one of them worries that it will sound rude. It does not have to. Here are lines that work in English and Hindi, grouped by what you actually mean, and where on the invitation to put them.

In India the question is rarely just 'gifts or no gifts'. Is a shagun envelope a gift? Is a box of sweets? Will your mother's sister listen anyway? Decide what you mean first; the wording follows from it.

Should you mention gifts at all?

Our wedding invitation wording guide puts it simply: mention gifts only if you are asking for none. 'No gifts please' is gracious; anything that reads as a request for money or a registry belongs elsewhere.

There is a good case for saying it. A bride's father we worked with asked for 'Blessings only' at the foot of the reception invitation, so that guests would not bring boxed gifts or cash envelopes. It is a familiar line on Indian cards, and guests understand it.

There is also a case for care. Some people find 'blessings only' a little dismissive of a custom they value, and many elders will bring shagun whatever the card says, because giving it is how they bless. Word the line so that nobody who brings something feels they got it wrong.

No bouquetsKindly, no bouquets.A long reason why.

'We kindly request no boxed gifts' tells guests that shagun is still welcome without asking for it, which is usually what families mean. Whichever line you choose, say it once.

Where to put it

  • At the end of the invitation, after the functions and the venue, in a smaller line. Never in the opening lines, where it is the first thing anyone reads.
  • On the reception page, if that is where gifts would be given. The reception usually has the largest guest list, and the most boxed gifts.
  • Not on the save the date. It is too early, and it is the wrong first message. A save the date carries the names, the date and the city, and nothing else.
  • Not in the WhatsApp message. If someone asks what to bring, answer them directly, in your own words. Two replies are in the samples below.

What not to write

  • 'Do not bring gifts.' A command, not a request. 'We kindly request no gifts' says the same thing with grace.
  • Amounts, or 'cash only'. It turns a blessing into a bill.
  • Bank details, UPI IDs or QR codes on the main invitation. If you are collecting for a charity, point people to the charity's own page.
  • A long explanation. 'Since we already have everything we need for our new home...' invites people to argue. One warm line is enough.
  • A line one family has not agreed to. Gifts exchanged as part of the rituals, the shagun, the milni, the gifts between the two families, are separate from what guests bring. Agree the line with both sides before it goes on the card.

If guests still bring something

Some will, and that is fine. Accept it warmly, thank them like everyone else, and never mention the line on the card. An elder who brings shagun after reading 'blessings only' is giving you their blessing in the form they know.

Thank-you messages for those gifts, including one for 'we asked for none and you gave anyway', are in thank-you messages after the wedding.

Other occasions

The same lines work for an anniversary, a 60th birthday or a griha pravesh, where 'no gifts' is even more common because the hosts are older and already have what they need. For a parents' anniversary organised by the children, the line usually comes from the children: 'Mummy and Papa have asked for nothing but your blessings.'

Questions people ask

How do I politely say no gifts on a wedding invitation?

With one warm line at the end of the invitation, such as 'Your blessings are the only gift we ask for'. Avoid a bare 'No gifts', which reads like a rule, and say it once rather than on every page.

What does 'blessings only' mean on an Indian invitation?

That the family asks for no gifts, only the guests' good wishes for the couple. Many guests, elders especially, will still bring shagun, and families accept it graciously.

Is it rude to write no gifts on an invitation?

Not if it is warm and short. What reads as rude is a command ('do not bring gifts'), a long explanation, or any mention of money.

How do I say no gifts in Hindi?

आपका आशीर्वाद ही हमारा उपहार है (aapka aashirwad hi hamara uphaar hai, your blessing is our gift) is the simplest. For a fuller line: कृपया उपहार न लाएँ, आपकी उपस्थिति और आशीर्वाद ही हमारे लिए सबसे बड़ा उपहार है।

Does 'no gifts' mean shagun or cash is okay?

Usually not: 'no gifts' means nothing at all, envelopes included, unless the card says 'no boxed gifts', which leaves room for shagun. As a guest, a warm card with your blessings is always right, and for close family a word with the hosts settles it.

Can I ask for a charity donation instead of gifts?

Yes. Name the charity and give its own link or details, in one line at the end of the invitation. Keep your bank details and UPI codes off the invitation.

What should we do if guests bring gifts anyway?

Accept them warmly and thank them like everyone else, without mentioning the card. Many elders bless with shagun whatever the invitation says.
