What a Hindu wedding invitation says
A Hindu wedding card begins with Ganesh ji, because every auspicious start does. The first line is usually "Shri Ganeshaya Namah", often with the shloka "Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada" asking that the work go without obstacles. Families who worship Krishna or Shiva may open with their own deity instead, and a Pushtimarg Vaishnav card often begins "Shri Krishnah Sharanam Mama".
Then the invitation is made by the elders, not the couple. The grandparents and parents invite you "with great joy" to the wedding of their son or daughter, the other family is named with the same respect, and a north Indian card ends with the darshanabhilashi (the relatives who look forward to seeing you) and the swagatakarta (those who will receive you). It sounds formal because it is meant to: the card speaks for the whole family.
The date carries the muhurat. Many families write the tithi and the Hindu month beside the English date, and give the exact time of the pheras, because that time was chosen by the pandit and guests plan around it.
The functions, in the order they go on the card
- Sagai, Roka or Tilak - the families agree and the engagement is blessed
- Ganesh Puja and Mandap Muhurat - the first rites at home
- Mehndi and Sangeet - the evenings of song, dance and henna
- Haldi - turmeric for the bride and groom, usually the morning of the wedding or the day before
- Baraat, Milni and Varmala - the groom's procession, the families meeting, the garlands
- Pheras and Kanyadaan - the seven rounds of the sacred fire, the heart of the wedding
- Vidaai and Reception - the bride's farewell, then the party for everyone
Not every family keeps every one, and names change by region: Mayra or Bhaat in a Marwari home, Grah Shanti in a Gujarati one, Aaiburo Bhaat in a Bengali one. On a website each function gets its own card with its time, venue, map and dress code, so the guest invited only to the reception sees the reception.
