Save the date for an Indian wedding: ideas and designs, when to send it, and messages for WhatsApp
Save the date ideas for an Indian wedding (photo, video, a one-screen link, a caricature), when to send it, what to put on it, and messages to copy.

Send a save the date 4 to 12 months ahead depending on how far guests travel, with only your names, the dates, the city and 'invitation to follow'. It can be a photo, a short video, an illustrated card or a one-screen link. On WhatsApp, send it as its own short message, and keep its link separate from the full invitation so guests never open the wrong one.
On this page
A save the date does one job. It tells people to block a date so they do not book something else. That is all. Everything else can wait for the invitation.
The mistake almost everyone makes is putting too much on it, which creates confusion about whether the invitation has already been sent. The newer mistake, now that both go out on WhatsApp, is letting the two links get mixed up. This page covers the formats and ideas families use, when to send it, what to write, and how to keep it apart from the invitation.
When to send it
| Situation | Send it |
|---|---|
| Wedding in the same city | Four to six months ahead |
| Guests travelling within India | Six to eight months ahead |
| Destination wedding | Eight to twelve months ahead |
| Guests travelling from abroad | Ten to twelve months, because of visas and flight prices |
| Peak season, November to February | Add a month, since venues and travel fill early |

What goes on it, and what does not
- Include: your names, the date, the city, and the words invitation to follow.
- Include if it is a destination wedding: a rough idea of how many days, so guests can plan leave.
- Leave off: the full venue address, which may still change.
- Leave off: RSVP details. You are not asking for a reply yet.
- Leave off: the full schedule of functions. That is the invitation's job.
- Leave off: gift or registry information entirely.
Save the date ideas: formats and designs
Whatever it looks like, a save the date is read once, on a phone, in a few seconds. Choose the format by who you are sending it to, then keep the words to the four on the list above.
| Format | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| A photo card | Couples with a pre-wedding shoot already done | Few words, set large enough to read on a phone |
| A short video | WhatsApp Status, Reels, and relatives who forward everything | Keep the date on screen long enough to read twice |
| An illustrated card or a caricature | Couples who want it to look like them without a shoot | Faces made with AI tools need checking by the two of you |
| A one-screen link | Guests who need the date and city to hand, and a link you can later point to the invitation | Make sure it is clearly a save the date, not the invitation |
| A save the date website | Destination weddings, where guests start planning travel early | Nothing on it that may still change, such as the venue or timings |
Ideas that feel like your wedding
- The date in mehendi on the bride's palm, photographed close, with the names in the caption.
- Your city at dusk, painted or photographed, with the date in the sky. The AI invitation guide has prompts for a painted scene or a short clip.
- Something from your story: the chai stall where you met, the kite you flew at Uttarayan, the station where one of you waited.
- A ticket for a destination wedding, a train or flight ticket with the date and the city, that tells guests to plan travel.
- Both families in one photograph, for a save the date that comes from the parents to the elders.
- A date to scratch or tap, for friends who enjoy it. For elders, keep the date plainly visible as well.
Most invitation makers now sell save the dates as well. On 27 October 2026, WedMeGood listed 111 save the date cards, InviteMart 416 save the date designs, Invity's Royal plan included an animated save-the-date card, and Wedence's Signature plan added save-the-date and invitation videos. What guests abroad need from it
For relatives and friends abroad, the save the date is the message that decides whether they come. Send it to them first, the day the date is fixed, and make sure it answers what they must arrange months ahead:
- The dates, all of them. If there are three days of functions, say so, so they know how much leave to ask for.
- The city, and the nearest airport if it is not obvious. A wedding in a small town near a big city needs one line on where to fly into.
- That travel details will follow. So nobody books a hotel before you know the venue.
- Time to arrange papers. Visas, passports and travel documents take weeks, which is why ten to twelve months is not too early.
The guide for NRI guests covers what they need next, from time zones to the invitation itself, and destination wedding invitations covers travel for everyone.
Sending it on WhatsApp
Most save the dates now go out on WhatsApp, and four habits keep them from being mistaken for something else.
- Send it as its own message. A warm line, the date and the city. Not inside a family forward, and not under a long paragraph about venues that are not booked yet.
- From the right phone. Your friends hear it from you. Your parents' friends and the elders hear it from your parents.
- Abroad first. Families flying in need the most notice, for visas, leave and fares, so send to them the day the date is fixed. The guide for NRI guests covers what they need next.
- Say what comes next. End with 'the full invitation will follow', so nobody books a hotel from the save the date alone.
The messages further down are ready to copy, in English and Hindi, including a line written in the families' voice: '[Names] are getting married on [date], and they wanted you to be among the first to know. The full invitation will follow soon.'
Keep the save the date and the invitation apart
Once the save the date and the invitation are both links, they can get mixed up, and families find out at the worst moment. One family this season kept opening the old save the date link when they were expecting the invitation, because the wrong link had gone round. An elder in that family opened it at a card shop, in front of other people, and was embarrassed.
Four habits prevent it:
- A separate link for each. The save the date has its own link and the invitation has its own.
- Point the old link at the new one. Once the invitation is out, ask whoever made the save the date to make its link open the invitation, or at least to add a line on it that sends people there.
- Say which is which. In your messages call them 'the save the date' and 'the invitation', never just 'the link'.
- Send the invitation as a fresh message, not as a reply buried under the save the date, and take the save the date out of any pinned messages and group descriptions.
The WhatsApp sending guide makes the same check its first step: before you send, make sure it is the right link. The whole sequence, save the date to thank-you note, is in our invitation timeline.
A matching save the date
If you order your invitation from Invifest, the Matching Save the Date (₹978) is a one-screen version of your invitation's own design, with your names, the date and the city. It is made from your invite once the invite is made, and reaches you within 3 days of the invite's first version, with one round of changes (Terms, B7).
Because it is made from the invitation, order the invitation early if you want the save the date out early. Keep in mind that the invitation's two included rounds of changes are sent within 7 days of its first version; changes after that are paid, and two more rounds are ₹578 at checkout. Every add-on is on the pricing page.
Who should get one
Only people who are definitely invited. This sounds obvious and it is the most common mistake made with save the dates.
A save the date is a commitment. Once somebody has one, you cannot quietly leave them off the invitation list later without it being noticed and remembered. Guest lists shrink far more often than they grow, usually when the venue capacity becomes real.
So send it to your certain list only, and leave the maybes for the invitation itself. It is much easier to add people later than to remove them.

Questions people ask
How far in advance should a save the date go out?
Four to six months for a local wedding, six to eight if guests are travelling within India, and eight to twelve for a destination wedding or guests coming from abroad.
What are some save the date ideas for an Indian wedding?
A photo from your pre-wedding shoot, a short video for Status, an illustrated card or a caricature, or a one-screen link. For something of your own: the date in mehendi on the bride's palm, your city at dusk with the date in the sky, a ticket for a destination wedding, or both families in one photograph.
Can a save the date be a video or a website?
Yes. A short video works well on WhatsApp Status, and a link or a small website gives guests abroad the date and city to hand. A link has one more advantage: once the invitation is ready, it can be pointed at the invitation.
What should a save the date message say?
Your names, the date or dates, the city, and that the invitation will follow. On WhatsApp, add one warm line, such as 'we wanted you to be among the first to know', and nothing about the venue or the functions yet.
Who should receive a save the date?
Only people who are definitely invited. Once someone has one you cannot quietly drop them later, and guest lists usually shrink rather than grow.
Can we send a save the date on WhatsApp?
Yes, and most people now do. Send it as its own short message, from the parents' phones for the elders. A link works better than an image, because once the invitation is ready the save the date link can be pointed at it, and anyone who opens the old message lands on the full invitation.
Should the save the date and the invitation be the same link?
Keep them separate, and once the invitation is out, point the old save the date link at it. One family this season had the wrong link going round, and an elder opened the old save the date at a card shop in front of others and was embarrassed.
Is a save the date necessary?
Not always. If your wedding is local and less than three months away, skip it and send the invitation. A save the date arriving late just confuses people.
