On this page
This page is written for the groom's parents. It covers the host line in English and Hindi, the functions your side usually hosts, how to put the baraat on the invitation so nobody waits at the wrong gate, the reception for business guests, and messages you can send from your own phone.
How to write the host line for your son's wedding
The host line says who is inviting. On your son's invitation that is you, so the wording follows from your names: you invite guests to the wedding of your son, and the bride is named with her parents.
In English the plain form is 'Mr and Mrs [Surname] request the pleasure of your company at the wedding of their son [Name] with [Name], daughter of Mr and Mrs [Surname]'. In Hindi the groom's name carries Chi. (chiranjeev, may he live long) and the bride's carries Sau. Kaa. (saubhagyakankshini, a girl who is to be married) or Aayushmati.
| Part of the card | In English | In Hindi |
|---|---|---|
| You, the hosts | Mr and Mrs [Surname], or Smt. [Mother] and Shri [Father] | श्रीमती [नाम] एवं श्री [नाम] |
| Your son | their son [Name] | सुपुत्र चि. [नाम] |
| The bride | [Name], daughter of Mr and Mrs [Surname] | सौ. कां. [नाम], सुपुत्री श्रीमती [नाम] एवं श्री [नाम] |
| Grandparents | With the blessings of [Names] | आशीर्वाद: श्री [नाम] एवं श्रीमती [नाम] |
| A grandparent who has passed | the late Shri [Name] | स्व. श्री [नाम] |
| Your family, at the end | With love, the [Surname] family | दर्शनाभिलाषी: [नाम] · विनीत: [नाम] |
In October 2026 alone, parents asked us to put both mothers' names before the fathers', to write Mr and Mrs instead of Smt., and to add 'Late Shri' before a grandfather who had passed. All of these are fine. What causes trouble is doing it one way for your family and another way for the bride's, so agree the style with her parents before either card goes out.
Families also differ on ji. Shri and Smt. already carry the respect on a card, so many families keep ji for their messages and for the list of elders. Whichever you choose, use it the same way on both sides.
Which functions the groom's family hosts
It depends on your community, but across most of North India the pattern is the same. The bride's family hosts the wedding itself. You host what happens at your home before it, the baraat that leaves from it, and the reception after.
| Function | What happens | Who usually comes |
|---|---|---|
| Tilak or sagai | The bride's father or brother and the men of her family come to your home, put a tilak on your son's forehead and bring shagun. | Close family of both sides |
| Haldi | Turmeric for your son at his own home, the day before or the morning of the wedding. | Family and close friends |
| Mehndi and sangeet | Many families now hold these jointly with the bride's side, or one each. | Family and friends |
| Sehra bandi | The sehra, a veil of flowers or pearls, is tied on the groom at home before he leaves. | Family |
| Ghudchadi and baraat | He rides the decorated mare and the procession sets out for the bride's venue with the band. | Everyone you invite to the wedding |
| Reception | Your own party for the widest list, often called Aashirwad Samaroh. | Colleagues, business contacts, neighbours |
Communities add their own. In Punjabi families the groom's side has the Ghara Ghardoli and the sehra and ghodi at home, and the two families meet in the Milni at the venue. In Marwari families your son's mama, his mother's brother, arrives for the Mahira Dastoor with gifts for the family, and the bride is welcomed home with Mooh Dikhai. In Bengali families your reception is the Bou Bhaat, the day after the wedding. The Punjabi, Marwari and Bengali guides list each function in order.
How to put the baraat on the invitation
The baraat is the one function where guests have to be in two places: where it gathers and where it arrives. If the invitation gives only the wedding venue, half your friends drive straight there and stand outside while the procession is still forming two kilometres away.
- Where it gathers. The name of the place and its own map pin, not the wedding venue's pin. If it leaves from your house, a temple or a dharamshala, say so.
- When it leaves. 'Baraat prasthan, 7 pm' tells guests the departure. Add a time to arrive by, about half an hour earlier, because a baraat waits for nobody's parking.
- Where it is going. The bride's venue with its own pin, for guests who skip the procession and come for the pheras or the dinner.
- Safas. If safas will be tied for the men at the gathering point, give that time too. Guests enjoy it and come early for it.
- Buses for an outstation baraat. The departure time, the pickup point and one number to call.
On an Invifest invitation every function has its own card with its own time, venue and map button, so the baraat's pin and the wedding venue's pin never get mixed up.
The reception: Aashirwad Samaroh evam Swaruchi Bhoj
The reception is usually your party, and its guest list is the longest of the wedding: your colleagues, your business contacts, the society, people who were never coming to the pheras.
Hindi cards often call it Aashirwad Samaroh evam Swaruchi Bhoj. Aashirwad Samaroh is a gathering to bless the newly married couple, and swaruchi bhoj is a buffet, a meal where guests serve themselves to their own taste. It reads warmly, and it tells older guests exactly what kind of evening it is.
In October 2026 a father ordered a reception card worded exactly that way for about a hundred business contacts, separate from the invitation that went to the family. That is the cleanest way to do it. Business guests get a link with only the reception on it, so nobody asks why they were not invited to the haldi.
- A separate link for one event (₹999 at checkout): a second link of your invitation in the same design, with only the reception's day, time, venue and dress code.
- Aangan (₹3,000): your whole guest list in one place. Every guest gets a personal link that shows only the functions you chose for them, sent from your own WhatsApp, and you can see who has opened it and who is coming.
The reception guide has more on timing, dress codes and the South Indian reception that comes before the wedding, and inviting guests to only some functions covers the tiers most families use.
Who sends it, and from which phone
Guests trust a message from a number they know. Many parents send the invitation from their own WhatsApp rather than the son's, and the families we work with keep asking for exactly that. One family had the guest dashboard open on the parents' and the grandfather's phones at the same time.
- Ganesh ji and the family deity firstMany families still keep a printed card or two for this, even when everyone else gets a link.
- Elders and the closest relativesA call or a visit first, then the link, so the link is a reminder and not the invitation itself.
- Relatives and family friendsA personal message to each household from your number. Write sapariwar, or 'with family', so nobody wonders whether the children are invited.
- Your colleagues and business contactsThe reception link only, with a formal line from the father or the mother, whoever they know. Your other children invite their own friends; their messages are in the sister's or brother's wedding guide.
- The society or mohalla groupOne message with the function they are invited to. Anyone who has your main link can see every function on it, so send the main link only to people invited to all of them.
For three hundred guests, sending on WhatsApp without getting your number blocked has the method step by step.
A father who ordered his son's invitation from us wanted every piece of stationery to match the logo on his son's save the date. It is worth deciding that early: one look for the save the date, the invitation and the reception link reads as one family's wedding.
When the bride's family sends their own version
The bride's family will invite their own guests, and many families now use the same design for both: her name first and her family's functions on theirs, your son's name first and your functions on yours, with the same wedding date and venue. Guests on both sides see one wedding, and nobody gets a schedule that was not meant for them.
At Invifest the other side's link is ₹999 on Sindoori and Gulmohar and ₹1,500 on every other design. It reaches you within 2 days of the first family's final invite and has two rounds of changes of its own. See a sample with both sides, or read what changes between the two versions.
One more thing to agree on: how much of the other family to print. Usually the bride is written with her parents' names. On one Marwari wedding in October 2026, the groom's version listed only the bride's parents and its own family in full, and the bride's version did the reverse.

Questions people ask
How do I write an invitation for my son's wedding?
Start with the host line in your names, then 'the wedding of our son', his name, and the bride's name with her parents' names. Then list the functions your family hosts, each with its date, time and venue, the baraat's gathering place and departure time, and the reception.
Should the baraat time be on the invitation?
Yes. Give the place where the baraat gathers with its own map pin, the time it leaves and the venue it goes to. Guests who know only the wedding venue tend to drive straight there and miss the procession.
How do I invite business contacts only to the reception?
Send them a link that shows only the reception. At Invifest that is a separate one-event link (₹999), or Aangan (₹3,000), where every guest gets a personal link with only the functions you chose for them.
What is 'Aashirwad Samaroh evam Swaruchi Bhoj'?
A Hindi phrase used for receptions: a gathering where guests bless the newly married couple, followed by a buffet dinner. Swaruchi bhoj means a meal where guests serve themselves to their own taste.
Can we send the invitation from the father's WhatsApp?
Yes, and guests often prefer it, because they know the number. With Aangan the dashboard works on several family phones at once, so the father, the mother and the groom can each send from their own number.
Should the bride's parents be named on our invitation?
Usually yes, as 'daughter of Mr and Mrs [Surname]' or 'suputri Shrimati [Naam] evam Shri [Naam]'. Some families print only her parents and list their own family in full. Agree it with the bride's family so the two cards match.
How is the bride written on the reception card?
As a married woman. In Hindi that is Sau. (saubhagyavati) before her name, with Chi. before the groom's. Sau. Kaa. is only for a bride before her wedding.
