Is it rude to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp? Who gets a visit, a call or a link

Ask ten families and you will hear both answers. Some aunts still feel that a wedding card which did not come to the door was not really an invitation. Their children have not received a paper card from a friend in years.

Both are right about something. In WeddingWire India's Annual Wedding Industry Survey 2024-25, 57% of the people who took part said they had used WhatsApp to announce their wedding (WeddingWire India). What decides whether it feels respectful is whether the person felt personally invited, and the app has little to do with that. Here is the plan most families we work with follow, and what to do if you are the one who received the WhatsApp invitation.

Why some people still find it rude

For a long time the visit was the invitation. The family went from house to house with the cards and a box of sweets, sat for a cup of tea in each home, and the card handed over said: you mattered enough for us to come. In many families the first card still goes to Ganesh ji, and the elders still expect theirs in person.

So when an uncle receives the same image his whole office group received, with no name and no call, he reads it as a forward, and he is not wrong. 'Should I go to the marriage of a friend if he invites me through WhatsApp message?' is asked on Quora again and again, in English and in Hindi. Read those questions closely and the hurt is about being one of many, with nobody taking the trouble to call.

The plan most families use now

Almost every family we make invitations for ends up with the same layered plan, in which each circle gets what it expects:

Who gets what: the invitation plan most Indian families follow
WhoHow they are invitedWhat they receive
Grandparents, the bua and mama, the closest elders, the family deityA visit, with sweetsA printed card or the printed PDF, handed over in person, then the link
Relatives and family friendsA phone call firstThe link on WhatsApp, with their name in the first line
Friends and cousins, in India and abroadA personal messageThe link, with a line in your own words
Colleagues and business contactsA message, or in person at workA link with only the functions they are invited to, often the reception

Most couples we make invitations for print thirty to fifty cards instead of three hundred and send the link to everyone else. The cards go to the first row of that table. Count households, not people, as our invitation timeline explains, and add a few for the puja and to keep.

The last row matters more than it looks. A colleague invited to the reception should get an invitation that is complete in itself, with no sign of the functions before it. Our guide to inviting guests to only some functions shows how, and our reception guide has the wording.

How to make a WhatsApp invitation feel personal

  • Their name and relation in the first line. 'Sharma uncle, namaste' reads very differently from a message that opens with the couple's names.
  • One line in your own words. A sentence nobody else got: 'Papa says you have to dance at the sangeet, no excuses.'
  • The right sender. The parents' circle hears from the parents' number and your friends from yours. Our WhatsApp sending guide shows how families split the list.
  • A voice note for elders. Thirty seconds in their own language says more than a paragraph.
  • A link that greets them. With Aangan, our guest dashboard (₹3,000 with an invitation), each guest's personal link opens with their own name on it.

Elders who expect a card

Some elders will feel invited only with a card in their hands, and there is no reason to argue with that. Print a few. If your invitation is a link, the PDF of your invitation (₹1,000 at Invifest) gives you its own pages, laid out page by page, ready to print a handful of copies for the elders and for the puja. One family this season printed only the first five pages, up to the family section, for the card puja on Dussehra.

Call before you send the link to an elder, even if you will also visit. Many of them have heard about fake wedding cards on WhatsApp, and your call is how they know this one is yours. Our guide to making a digital invitation easy for elders covers the rest, and digital or printed compares the two honestly.

If you received a WhatsApp invitation: how to reply

If the invitation came to you personally, with your name on it, treat it exactly as you would a card. Reply within a day or two, congratulate the couple, and say clearly whether you will come and how many of you. If the invitation has a reply form, fill it in as well, because that is where the family is counting. If it is someone close, call them too.

If it reached you as a forward in a group, it may still be meant for you, so ask the family rather than guess. And if you cannot come, say so warmly and early. A clear no, with your blessings, helps the family plan far more than a polite 'try karenge'. There are replies you can copy below, in English and in Hindi.

When a WhatsApp invitation really is not enough

  • Close family you did not call. If your mama hears about the wedding from a link before he hears your voice, no design will fix it.
  • A family in mourning. Call first, and in many families visit. A link arriving in the middle of their grief, with no word from you, will be remembered.
  • The very old. A grandparent who does not use WhatsApp should hear it from you, in person or on the phone, and get a printed card.
  • A bare forward of someone else's card. If you are passing on an invitation for a wedding you are not hosting, add a line of your own, or let the hosts send it.

Everyone else, including most relatives today, is happy with a personal message and a link that has every function, the venue on a map and a place to reply. That is what an invitation website does, and you can open one in a live demo.

Questions people ask

Is it rude to invite someone to a wedding on WhatsApp?

Not for most guests today, as long as it is personal: their name in the first line and a line in your own words. Call or visit the elders and close family first, then send the link.

Should I attend a wedding if I was invited only on WhatsApp?

Yes, if it was sent to you personally. That is how most invitations travel now. A bare forward in a group is different; if you are unsure whether you are invited, ask the family.

How do I reply to a wedding invitation received on WhatsApp?

Thank them, congratulate the couple, and say clearly whether you will come and how many of you. If the invitation has a reply form, fill it in as well, because that is where the family is counting.

Do we still need printed cards if we send e-invites?

A few. Most couples we make invitations for print thirty to fifty cards, for the elders, the puja and keepsakes, and send the link to everyone else.

How many Indian couples use WhatsApp to invite?

In WeddingWire India's Annual Wedding Industry Survey 2024-25, 57% of respondents said they had used WhatsApp to announce their wedding.

Is it okay to send the invitation to a WhatsApp group?

As an announcement in a group where people already talk, like the family group, yes, followed by personal messages. It should not be the only invitation an elder or a close relative gets.

What should I write when I send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp?

The guest's name, a line in your own words, and the link with every function on it. Our WhatsApp messages guide has messages for every relation, and there are Hindi messages too.
