First Holy Communion invitation wording for Indian Catholic families, with the church and the lunch after
First Holy Communion invitation wording for Indian Catholic families: the Mass, the celebration after, who is named, and lines to send on WhatsApp.

A First Holy Communion invitation names the child and the parents, gives the church and the time of the Mass, and says where the lunch or party is afterwards. The parish fixes the date and the Mass, often for the whole class together, so wait for its notice before you book a hall. Children receive it from about seven, after their first confession. Wording in English and Tamil is below.

For a Catholic family, the First Holy Communion is the day a child receives the Eucharist for the first time, usually at a parish Mass with the rest of their catechism class, dressed in white, with the whole family in the pews.
The invitation is mostly about logistics: which Mass, which church, how long it runs, and where everyone goes afterwards. This page covers the customs that shape it, what to put on it, and wording you can copy in English, with a Tamil version for Puthu Nanmai.
What the day is, and when it is held
Holy Communion is the Eucharist, received at Mass. The Church's Code of Canon Law asks that children who have reached the use of reason be prepared, and receive it as soon as possible after their first confession (canons 913 and 914). A child is presumed to have the use of reason at seven (canon 97). In practice the parish prepares the children through catechism classes, and they receive it together.
Many parishes hold it in the Easter season, the weeks after Easter, which usually fall in April and May. The white the children wear, as the Kerala Catholic publisher Lifeday explains, recalls the white garment of their baptism. Girls usually wear white dresses, often with a veil, and boys white shirts or suits.
In some languages the day has its own name. Tamil Catholics call it Puthu Nanmai (புதுநன்மை), and Malayali Catholics the Adya Kurbana (ആദ്യകുർബാന), the first Qurbana. Use the word your relatives use on the invitation they will read.
The parish sets the date, not the family
This is the one thing to know before you print anything. The First Communion is usually a parish occasion: the date, the Mass and its time are announced for the whole class, with the first confession before it. One Kerala parish's First Communion, as a local news report told it, had 35 children receiving together. Families plan the lunch or the party around the parish's Mass.
So wait for the parish notice before you book a hall, and put the parish's Mass time on the invitation, not the time you hope to start. Ask the parish office about anything that affects your guests: how long the Mass will run, whether there is a procession, and whether photographers may come near the altar.
What to put on the invitation
- The child's name, as the parish knows it, and the parents' names as the hosts.
- The godparents, if you wish. They stood for the child at baptism, and some families honour them on the card with a line of their own.
- The church, by its full name, with a map pin. Relatives from another town will not know which St Antony's or St Mary's you mean.
- The Mass time, and roughly how long it runs, so guests can plan the rest of the day.
- Where the celebration is, and when: lunch at home, at a hall or at a restaurant, usually straight after the Mass.
- A reply, for the meal. Everyone is welcome at the Mass; the caterer needs a number for the lunch.
- Gift guidance, if you want to give it. Many families ask for prayers only, or suggest something for the child's education or a charity.
- A line for guests of other faiths: they are welcome at the Mass and are not expected to receive Communion.
Some families invite everyone to the Mass and a smaller circle to the lunch. If you do, send the lunch guests a version with the lunch on it, and keep it off the one that goes to everyone else. The baptism guide covers the sacrament before this one, and the Christian wedding guide explains how a nuptial Mass is worded for guests who have never been to one.
When to send it
Once the parish has fixed the date: two to three weeks ahead for family in town, and as early as you can for relatives who will travel. Send a short reminder the day before with the Mass time and the map, so nobody arrives after the children have gone up.
A First Communion invitation as a link
We have no First Communion design of our own. Our Christian wedding designs show the style we work in: Chapel, quiet, with one photograph and the church timings; Cathedral, formal, with room for a Bible verse and the order of service; and Amore, which opens on a single line of scripture. For a First Holy Communion we would make it as a custom invitation, with the church and the lunch on a map, the child's photographs and a reply form for the meal, in English or Tamil, quoted on WhatsApp before you pay.

Questions people ask
At what age is First Holy Communion?
Once a child has reached the use of reason and been prepared, which the Church presumes from the age of seven (Code of Canon Law, canons 97 and 914). In practice the parish decides when each catechism class is ready, and the children receive it together, after their first confession.
What should a First Holy Communion invitation say?
The parents' names, the child's name, the church and the time of the Mass, and where and when the celebration is afterwards. Add the godparents if you like, a reply-by date if there is a meal, and a verse such as John 6:35, 'I am the bread of life'.
When should we send First Holy Communion invitations?
Once the parish has announced the date and the Mass time: two to three weeks ahead for family in town, and as early as you can for relatives who will travel. Send a short reminder the day before with the time and the map.
Do we name the godparents on the invitation?
You may. They stood for the child at baptism, and some families honour them with a line such as 'Godparents: [names]'. It is a choice, not a rule.
Can guests who are not Catholic attend?
Yes, everyone is welcome at the Mass. Only Catholics receive Communion, so a line on the invitation telling guests of other faiths that they need not go up puts them at ease.
What is First Holy Communion called in Tamil and Malayalam?
Tamil Catholics call it Puthu Nanmai (புதுநன்மை), and Malayali Catholics call it the Adya Kurbana (ആദ്യകുർബാന).
Can I make a First Holy Communion invitation online?
Yes. A card image is the quickest. An invitation link can also carry the church and the lunch on a map and collect replies for the meal. Invifest has no First Communion design; we make one as a custom invitation, quoted on WhatsApp before you pay.
