Shrimad Bhagwat Katha invitation card and messages in Hindi and English
Shrimad Bhagwat Katha invitation card wording and WhatsApp messages in Hindi and English, with the seven days, the kalash yatra and the bhandara to list.

A Shrimad Bhagwat Katha invitation gives the seven dates and the daily katha time, the kathavachak's name, the venue with a map, the kalash yatra on the first morning, the special days such as Krishna Janmotsav and Rukmini Vivah, and the havan, purnahuti and bhandara at the end. It is signed by the yajman family or the organising samiti. Hindi and English wording to copy is below.

A Shrimad Bhagwat Katha runs for seven days, and the invitation has to carry all seven: when the katha starts each day, which day Krishna is born, where the kalash yatra leaves from and when the bhandara is. Printed cards often squeeze all of it into dense Hindi, and people still phone to ask the time.
This page covers what the katha is and why it lasts a week, what goes on the card, the usual order of the days, the Hindi words families use, wording in Hindi and English to copy, and how to send it on WhatsApp as a card, a link or a video.
What a Shrimad Bhagwat Katha is
The Shrimad Bhagwat, the Bhagavata Purana, is the Sanskrit text of Vishnu's avatars and the life of Krishna, in twelve books (skandhas) traditionally counted at 18,000 verses. A Bhagwat Katha is its telling, in Hindi or the local language and with bhajans, by a kathavachak, also called the katha vyas, seated on the vyas peeth. The family that hosts it and sits for the daily puja is the yajman.
It usually runs for seven days, which is why it is also called a Bhagwat Saptah. Two stories explain the seven. King Parikshit, cursed to die in seven days, heard the Bhagwat from Shukdev in that time. And the Bhagwat Mahatmya, told at the start of the katha, is the story of Dhundhukari, a restless spirit set free after his brother Gokarna recited the Bhagwat to him over seven days.
Families hold a katha for blessings or in memory of a parent or grandparent; temples, trusts and neighbourhood samitis hold it for everyone. The invitation changes with who is hosting, but the facts it has to carry stay the same.
What to put on a Bhagwat Katha invitation
- The opening. ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥, ॥ जय श्री कृष्ण ॥ or ॥ श्री राधे कृष्ण ॥, then the name of the event: श्रीमद् भागवत कथा ज्ञान यज्ञ, or Shrimad Bhagwat Katha.
- The kathavachak. Their name and title, and where they come from, such as Shri Dham Vrindavan. Hindi cards write परम पूज्य (name) जी के श्रीमुख से, from the holy lips of.
- The dates and the daily time. The first and the last day, and the hours of each day's katha, for example 2 pm to 6 pm.
- The kalash yatra. The date, the time and the place it starts from, and what the women walking in it should wear or bring, if anything.
- The special days. The dates of Krishna Janmotsav, Govardhan Puja and chhappan bhog, Rukmini Vivah and Sudama Charitra, so people who can come only once can choose their day.
- The close. The havan and purnahuti, and the bhandara or mahaprasad, with the time it starts.
- The venue, with a map. A pandal on an open ground or a hall behind a temple is hard to find by name alone.
- Who invites. The yajman family (मुख्य यजमान), or the organising samiti or trust, with a phone number for questions.
- If it is in someone's memory, one line at the top: स्व. (name) की पुण्य स्मृति में, in the holy memory of the late (name).
- A live stream link, if the katha is streamed, for relatives who cannot travel.
The seven days, and the usual order
Every kathavachak paces the Bhagwat in their own way, so check the order with them before you print day-wise prasang. This is the order many seven-day kathas follow:
| Day | What is usually told | What families mark on the card |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | The Bhagwat Mahatmya: Gokarna and Dhundhukari | Kalash yatra in the morning; the katha begins |
| Day 2 | King Parikshit's curse and Shukdev's arrival | The daily katha time |
| Day 3 | Dhruv and Prahlad, and in some kathas Ajamil | The daily katha time |
| Day 4 | Vaman avatar, the churning of the ocean, the births of Ram and Krishna | Krishna Janmotsav, or Nandotsav |
| Day 5 | Krishna's childhood: Putana, the butter thief, Govardhan | Govardhan Puja and chhappan bhog |
| Day 6 | The Maharaas, Kansa's end, Uddhav and the gopis, Rukmini's wedding | Rukmini Vivah |
| Day 7 | Sudama, Dwarka, and Parikshit's liberation | Sudama Charitra; havan, purnahuti and bhandara |
The Hindi words on a katha card
Hindi katha invitations use a set of words most families recognise. If you are writing one for the first time, these are the ones you will need:
| Hindi | Read as | Means |
|---|---|---|
| श्रीमद् भागवत कथा ज्ञान यज्ञ | Shrimad Bhagwat Katha Gyan Yagya | The katha, described as a yagya of knowledge |
| सप्त दिवसीय / सप्ताह | Sapt divasiya / saptah | Lasting seven days / a seven-day katha |
| संगीतमय | Sangeetmay | With music and bhajans |
| कथा व्यास / कथावाचक | Katha vyas / kathavachak | The one who tells the katha |
| व्यास पीठ | Vyas peeth | The seat the katha is told from |
| श्रीमुख से | Shrimukh se | From the holy lips of, before the kathavachak's name |
| मुख्य यजमान | Mukhya yajman | The host who sits for the puja |
| मंगल कलश यात्रा | Mangal kalash yatra | The procession of women carrying kalash on the first morning |
| पूर्णाहुति | Purnahuti | The final offering of the havan |
| भंडारा / महाप्रसाद | Bhandara / mahaprasad | The meal for everyone at the end |
| सपरिवार इष्ट मित्रों सहित | Saparivar isht mitron sahit | With your family and friends |
| निवेदक / विनीत / दर्शनाभिलाषी | Nivedak / vineet / darshanabhilashi | The sign-off: the hosts, humbly, hoping to see you |
The kalash yatra opens the katha on the first morning: women carry kalash of water on their heads from a temple, a river or a pond to the katha venue, usually with drums and kirtan. In Gujarat the katha often opens with a pothi yatra, a procession that carries the Bhagwat pothi, the book itself, from the yajman's home or a temple to the katha mandap.
When to send it, and the reminders
Send the invitation two to three weeks before the first day, so relatives can plan to come for a few days, and call the elders yourself. Then send short reminders: the evening before the kalash yatra, the morning of each special day, and the day before the bhandara, when you also need a headcount for the cooks.
A seven-day katha also suits one short message each morning with that day's prasang and the time, so people who can come only once can pick their day. The wording below has one. Our guide to sending invitations on WhatsApp covers sending to a long list from your own number.
Card, link or video
A katha invitation can travel three ways, and many families use more than one. A printed card goes to the elders, the temple and the neighbours. A short video goes on WhatsApp Status and into the family groups. A link carries what both leave out.
If you make a Bhagwat Katha invitation video, keep it short, hold the dates and the venue on screen long enough to read, and use a bhajan rather than a film song. A video cannot open a map or take a reply, and a changed time means a new video, so send the link or the card with it. Our guides to invitation videos and to choosing a video or a website go through it.
A link holds all seven days with each day's prasang, the kalash yatra and the bhandara with their times, the venue on a map, and a reply form so you know how many to cook for. One katha invitation we made this year, for a seven-day Bhagwat katha within a larger mahotsav, gave each day its own card with that day's prasang in Hindi, and played the organisers' own bhajan while guests read.
At Invifest, our designers make each family its own invitation website. There is no ready-made katha design in our catalogue, so a Bhagwat Katha is made as a custom invitation, in Hindi, English or both. For a puja at home, the Satyanarayan Puja guide has wording of its own.

Why is the Bhagwat Katha held for seven days?
King Parikshit, cursed to die in seven days, heard the whole Bhagwat from Shukdev in that time. The Bhagwat Mahatmya adds the story of Dhundhukari, a spirit set free after hearing it from his brother Gokarna over seven days. That is why it is also called a Bhagwat Saptah.
What happens on each day of a Bhagwat Katha?
It varies with the kathavachak, but a common order is: day 1 the kalash yatra and the Mahatmya, day 2 Parikshit and Shukdev, day 3 Dhruv and Prahlad, day 4 Krishna Janmotsav, day 5 Govardhan Puja and chhappan bhog, day 6 Rukmini Vivah, and day 7 Sudama Charitra, with the havan and purnahuti.
What is a kalash yatra?
The procession that opens the katha on the first morning. Women carry kalash of water on their heads from a temple, a river or a pond to the katha venue, usually with drums and kirtan. The invitation should give its date, its starting point and its time.
Who is the yajman of a Bhagwat Katha?
The host who sits for the daily puja of the Bhagwat and of the kathavachak, often a husband and wife from the family that organises it. A katha run by a samiti may have several yajman couples.
Should I send a Bhagwat Katha invitation as a video?
A short video works well on WhatsApp Status and in family groups, but it cannot open a map or take a reply, and a changed time means a new video. Send it with a link or a card that carries the seven days, the timings and the venue.
When should a Bhagwat Katha invitation be sent?
Two to three weeks before the first day, so relatives can plan to come for a few days, with short reminders before the kalash yatra, on the special days and before the bhandara.
