In short

Invite friends in your own voice: their name, the functions they are invited to (often the sangeet, the haldi and the wedding), the dates and the link. Message your closest friends one by one before anything goes to a group, and give each group a link that shows only the functions that group is invited to.

Friends are the easiest guests to write to and the easiest to get wrong. The message can be as casual as your chats with them, but a friend who learns about your wedding from a group post, or sees a function they were not asked to, remembers it.

Below: which functions friends are usually invited to, how to handle close friends, the college group and friends abroad, how funny is too funny, and messages in English, Hinglish and Hindi you can copy.

Which functions to invite friends to

In most Indian weddings the parents' guest list and the couple's friends overlap only at the big events. Friends tend to be invited to the functions where they will have the most fun and be the most help, and the wording follows from that.

Which functions friends are usually invited to, and what the message should say
Usually invited? What to put in the message
Sangeet or cocktailYes, often the friends' main eventDate, start time, dress code or colour, whether they are performing
Haldi and mehndiClose friends, sometimes the whole groupStart and end time, and "wear something you do not mind getting yellow"
Wedding (pheras, nikah, Anand Karaj, church)YesThe muhurat or ceremony time, and when to arrive for the baraat
ReceptionYes, and the only event for wider friendsDate, time, venue, "with family" or not
Pre-wedding pujas, Tilak, RokaRarely, unless the friend is like familyUsually a call, not a message

If some friends are invited to more than others, do not send everyone the same link. Anyone who has your main link can see every function on it. With an Invifest invitation you can add a separate link with only one event on it, or use Aangan, the guest dashboard, where each guest's personal link shows only their own functions. One family we worked with made a guest group called "Office Friends" for exactly this; another kept the cocktail and the after party off the parents' links entirely. Inviting guests to only some functions goes through the options.

Close friends first, then the group

  1. Tell your closest friends yourselfA call, a voice note or a message in their own chat, before the date is public. These are the people who will hear it from someone else if you wait.
  2. Send the invitation to them one by oneTheir name at the top. It takes ten minutes for ten friends and it is the difference between an invitation and an announcement.
  3. Then post in the groupThe college group, the school group, the old office group. One message, with the link, and only if the whole group is invited to what the link shows.
  4. Follow up with the quiet onesSome friends never reply in a group. A one-line personal message a few days later gets an answer.

Friends who live far away

A friend in another city or another country needs three things your local friends do not: notice, the full plan, and permission to say no.

Notice. Send a save the date as soon as the dates are fixed, months ahead if they need leave, a visa or flights. Our save the date guide has the timing. The full plan. Which days, which venues, and roughly how far apart, so they can choose a hotel. Permission to say no. A line like "no pressure at all, but it would mean the world" makes it easier for them to answer honestly, and for you to plan.

Time zones matter more than people think. In winter, an invitation sent at 9 pm in India lands at 3:30 pm in London and 10:30 am in Toronto, a fine time; sent at 7 am IST, it arrives at 8:30 pm the night before in New York. One couple's guest list had fifty to seventy friends in Canada, where the groom lived, while the elders in India got printed cards. Another chose a kalash rather than a swastik on the antarpaat, so the symbol would not be misread by their friends from Germany. Wedding invitations for NRI guests has more on guests coming from abroad.

Funny without being rude

Friends expect a joke, and a funny line is often what gets the invitation forwarded with a laugh rather than ignored. A few rules keep it on the right side:

  • Joke about yourselves, not about marriage or your partner's family. "We are finally making it official" is fine. Jokes about losing freedom read badly when the in-laws see a forward.
  • Keep the facts plain. The joke can be the first line; the date, time and venue still need to be easy to find.
  • Assume it will be forwarded. A message to the group often ends up with a parent or an aunt. Write nothing you would not want them to read.
  • Do not threaten or guilt. "Come or we are not friends" is a joke to some people and an ultimatum to others.

What to send with the message

A message on its own gets lost; a forwarded poster gets lost faster. Send the message with one link that carries every function they are invited to, each with its date, time, venue and map, and a way to reply so you know how many friends are actually coming.

Friends are also the guests most likely to reply late. A short reminder message a week before the first function, with the link again, usually settles the headcount. For the wider list, our wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp and messages for colleagues cover the other guests, and sangeet invitation wording has lines for the friends' big night.

For the invitation itself, designs like Mehfil give the sangeet its own evening card, and every design in all designs carries each function separately, with a map and replies.

Questions people ask

How do I invite friends to my wedding on WhatsApp?

Message your closest friends one by one first, with their name, the functions they are invited to, the dates and the link. Then post one message in each group whose members are all invited to what the link shows.

Is it okay to invite friends in a WhatsApp group?

Yes, if everyone in the group is invited to the same functions. If only some are, message them individually; a group post that leaves people out is seen by the ones left out.

What is a good funny wedding invitation message for friends?

Joke about yourselves rather than about marriage or the families, keep the date, time and venue plain, and assume a parent will see the forward. Two funny messages are in the samples above.

Should I invite friends to every function?

Not necessarily. Friends are usually invited to the sangeet or cocktail, the wedding and the reception, close friends to the haldi and mehndi too. Give each group a link that shows only their functions.

How early should I send the invitation to friends abroad?

Send a save the date as soon as the dates are fixed, months ahead if they need leave, a visa or flights, and the full invitation six to eight weeks before the first function.

How do I invite a friend to the reception only?

Send them an invitation that shows only the reception, worded as an invitation to that evening. With Invifest that is a separate link with one event on it, or a personal link from Aangan.
