Ear piercing ceremony invitation: Karnavedha and Kathani Vizha wording, messages and design ideas
Ear piercing ceremony invitation wording for a Karnavedha or a Tamil Kathani Vizha: what to put on the card, the maternal uncle's line, messages and design.

An ear piercing ceremony invitation gives the child's name, the ceremony as your family calls it (Karnavedha, or Kathani Vizha in Tamil), the date and muhurtham, the temple or venue with a map, and where the meal is. Tamil cards often name the maternal uncle, who holds the child on his lap for the piercing. Send it two to three weeks ahead, with a reminder the day before.
On this page
Karnavedha, the ear piercing ceremony, is one of the sixteen samskaras, and in many families it is a full function: a muhurtham, often a temple, lunch for everyone who came and, in Tamil families, the maternal uncle with the child on his lap. Tamil families call it the Kathani Vizha, or simply Kaathu Kuthu.
This page covers the names, the age, who does what, what to put on the invitation, wording in English with the Tamil names, WhatsApp messages, and what makes a good design.
What the ceremony is called
Karna means ear and vedha means piercing. The rite is one of the sixteen samskaras, and the old reading is that it opens the child's ears to sacred sound. The texts make no difference between boys and girls. Wikipedia notes that it has become uncommon for boys, but Tamil families still hold it for sons: The Federal reported one in Cuddalore district in 2022, for three brothers at a temple, with at least 700 guests.
| Name | Language | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Karnavedha or Karnavedham | Sanskrit, used across India | The samskara's formal name |
| Karnavedh Sanskar | Hindi | The same samskara; in everyday Hindi, kaan chhidwana |
| Kathani Vizha (காதணி விழா) | Tamil | The name on the invitation: kathani is an ear ornament, vizha a function |
| Kaathu Kuthu (காது குத்து), also Kadhu Kuthal | Tamil | The everyday name: piercing the ears |
At what age, and where
It is usually held in the child's first, third or fifth year. The old texts allow several dates from the first months onwards, and the family priest fixes the muhurtham.
Many Tamil families hold the Kathani Vizha at a temple, often the shrine of their kula deivam, the family deity, and some combine it with the child's first tonsure. Murugan temples such as Palani are known for both. Other families hold it at home or in a hall, with the piercing in the morning and lunch after.
Who does what
- The parents invite, often with the grandparents named as blessing it.
- The maternal uncle holds the child. In Tamil families the thai maman (தாய் மாமன்) sits with the child on his lap while the ears are pierced, and his gifts, the thai maman seer, are part of the day. If the mother has no brother, a close family friend can take the role. Name him on the invitation.
- A goldsmith pierces the ears in the traditional form, with a gold needle, and puts in the child's first gold earrings. Some families now have it done by a doctor or a jeweller, and keep the function for the blessings.
- Relatives bless the child, usually with a gift, and stay for the meal.
What to put on the invitation
- The child's name, and the other children's if two or three are having it together.
- The ceremony's name as your family says it: Ear Piercing Ceremony, Karnavedha, Kathani Vizha or Kaathu Kuthu.
- The date and the muhurtham. Tamil cards often give the Tamil month and date beside the English one.
- The temple or venue, with a map pin, and the town if it is out of the city.
- Where the meal is, if it is not where the piercing happens.
- The maternal uncle's line, with his family's name, if your family includes it.
- The first tonsure, if it is on the same day.
- One or two phone numbers for anyone travelling to the temple.
Ideas for the invitation design
A good ear piercing invitation puts the child first and the details second. What works:
- The child's photograph or a painting of them, when the guests are family and friends. For a card that will be forwarded widely, an illustration is enough.
- Earrings as the motif. A pair of small gold jhumkas or studs says what the day is without a word.
- The temple. A gopuram, the family deity or temple bells, when the ceremony is at a temple.
- Temple colours: gold, kumkum red, turmeric yellow and leaf green, on cream rather than stark white.
- A big, clear time and place. Elders look for the muhurtham and the venue first, so make them the largest text after the child's name.
- Two languages, Tamil and English side by side, when the guest list runs from grandparents to colleagues.
Sending it on WhatsApp
- Call the elders and the maternal uncle's family first, then send the message.
- Write the time and the place in the message text, so guests can find them later without opening a picture.
- Send the temple's location as a map pin, with a line on parking or the nearest landmark if it is out of town.
- Send a reminder the evening before with the muhurtham and the map.
The WhatsApp guide covers groups, broadcast lists and timing. It is written for weddings, and the same rules hold here.
An ear piercing invitation as a link
We have no ear piercing design of our own. Kanha, painted with baby Krishna at a temple, is our design for the ceremonies around a new baby and shows the style we work in. For a Karnavedha or a Kathani Vizha we would make it as a custom invitation, agreed with you on WhatsApp first: the muhurtham, the temple on a map, the child's photographs if you want them and a reply form for the lunch, in English or Tamil.
Invifest makes invitations and guest management for weddings and every big moment. For the ceremonies before and after this one, see the Namkaran, Annaprashan, Mundan and Upanayanam guides.

Questions people ask
What is the ear piercing ceremony called?
Karnavedha, or Karnavedham, in Sanskrit, one of the sixteen samskaras, and Karnavedh Sanskar in Hindi. Tamil families call it the Kathani Vizha on the invitation and Kaathu Kuthu in everyday speech.
At what age is the ear piercing ceremony done?
Usually in the child's first, third or fifth year, and the priest fixes the muhurtham. The old texts allow dates from the first months onwards, and some families combine it with the first tonsure at a temple.
What should an ear piercing ceremony invitation say?
The child's name, the ceremony's name, the date and muhurtham, the temple or venue with a map, where the lunch is, and the parents' names as hosts. Tamil cards often add the maternal uncle's name. Close by asking guests to come with their families and bless the child.
How do I write an ear piercing ceremony invitation in Tamil?
Call it காதணி விழா (Kathani Vizha); the invitation is a காதணி விழா அழைப்பிதழ். Many cards start with the Pillaiyar Suzhi (உ), name the child, give the Tamil and English dates with the muhurtham and the temple, and name the thai maman (தாய் மாமன்). Have an elder who reads Tamil check the final card.
What is the maternal uncle's role at a Kathani Vizha?
In Tamil families the thai maman holds the child on his lap while the ears are pierced, and brings his gifts, the thai maman seer. It is the most important role after the parents', so many invitations name him.
Is the ear piercing ceremony done for boys?
Yes. The texts recommend it for boys and girls alike. It has become less common for boys, but Tamil families still hold it for sons, sometimes for brothers together.
Can the ear piercing be done on the same day as the mundan?
Yes, and families often combine it with the first tonsure, especially at a temple. Name both on the invitation with their times, and say where the lunch is if it is somewhere else.
What is a good ear piercing ceremony message for WhatsApp?
Hello [Name], [Child's name]'s ear piercing ceremony is on [date] at [time], at [venue]. We would love you and your family to come and bless the child, and stay for lunch. Time, place and map: [link]. More versions are in the samples on this page.
What design suits an ear piercing ceremony invitation?
One that puts the child first: a photograph or a painting of the child, small gold earrings as the motif, or the temple where the ceremony is held, in temple gold, kumkum red and turmeric yellow. Keep the muhurtham and the venue large, and add Tamil beside the English for a Tamil family.
