Haldi carnival invitation: what to call it, when to hold it, the dress code and wording to copy
Haldi carnival invitation wording in English and Hindi: what to call it, the timing, a dress code in colours, what goes on the card and who gets the link.

A haldi carnival is a haldi held as a daytime fair: the turmeric first, then game stalls, street food, music and often a pool. Its invitation needs what a plain haldi card does not: a start and an end time, one line on what will be there, a dress code given as colours, and a note to bring a change of clothes. If some guests are not invited, keep it on the links of those who are.
On this page
The haldi carnival is one of the newest functions on an Indian wedding invitation. This season, a carnival-style haldi or a daytime carnival party was one of the most common new functions on the invitations families asked us for. They called it Haldi Carnival, Poolside Haldi & Carnival, Haldi-Mehndi Carnival, The Colour of Us and Carnival of Love.
The turmeric is the same as at any haldi, and our haldi invitation guide covers the ritual and its plain wording. This page is about what changes when the haldi becomes a carnival: the name, the timing, the dress code, what goes on the card, who gets the link, and wording to copy in English and Hindi.
What a haldi carnival is
A haldi carnival turns the haldi into a mela. The family applies the turmeric first, the way it has always been done. Then the afternoon opens up into a fair: game stalls, food counters, a dhol or a DJ, and at many venues a pool. Planners and decorators list the same pieces again and again: a tug of war between the bride's side and the groom's, a photo booth, a bangle bar, a sketch artist, and counters for chaat, gola and candy floss.
The names families use
| Name on the card | What it tells guests |
|---|---|
| Haldi Carnival | Turmeric first, then the fair. The plainest name for it. |
| Poolside Haldi & Carnival | There is a pool, so guests pack swimwear and a change of clothes. |
| Haldi-Mehndi Carnival | Two functions in one afternoon, with the mehndi artists at the fair too. |
| The Colour of Us, Carnival of Love | A theme name. Write 'Haldi Carnival' under it, so the elders know which function it is. |
| Petal Shower | Flowers in place of turmeric. Say so, and nobody dresses for stains. |
| Carnival | A day party. Some families hold it in place of the haldi or the telbaan, so say on the card whether there is a haldi. |
When to hold it, and for how long
A plain haldi is a morning ritual that guests drop in on. A carnival is an afternoon they plan around, so print a start and an end time.
- In the day. The carnivals families described to us ran in daylight, most often from early afternoon into the golden hour before sunset, when the light is softest for photographs.
- On the right day. Families put it on the morning after the tilak, or on the second day of a wedding that runs over several days.
- With a gap after it. If the sangeet or the mehndi is the same evening, leave enough time for everyone to wash off the turmeric and change, and print both times so guests can see the gap.
The dress code: colours, not outfits
Yellow is the haldi's own colour, but the carnival is where families choose something else. On our calls, the dress codes families gave their carnivals were pastels, one colour for everyone such as lavender, 'sunset blush', or simply bright colours. Some also asked us to draw the couple on the invitation in the same colours, so the card matches the photographs.
Give the dress code as a palette, not as an outfit. A palette lets guests wear something they already own. An outfit rule gets you replies like 'ye kapda to mere paas hai hi nahi', I don't own anything like that. Lines that work:
- Colours of the day: yellow and white.
- Pastels: lavender, mint or peach.
- One colour for all of us: lavender.
- Sunset blush: pinks, peaches and corals.
- Bright and happy, in any colour you like.
- Bring a change of clothes. There will be colour, and maybe water.
Our guide to dress codes on the invitation has the line for every other function of the wedding.
What to put on a haldi carnival invitation
| Line | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| The name | Haldi Carnival, or your theme name with 'Haldi Carnival' under it | The elders know which function it is |
| Whose | [Bride's name]'s Haldi Carnival, or both names if it is joint | A joint carnival names both families |
| Day, date and time | Sunday, [Date], 12 noon to 5 pm | The end time tells guests how to plan the evening |
| Venue | [Lawn or poolside], [Venue], with a map pin | Resorts have several lawns, so name the right one |
| What will be there | Haldi, games, a pool and a dhol | One line sets the mood and tells guests what to wear |
| Dress code | Pastels, or yellow and white | Colours, not an outfit |
| What to bring | A change of clothes, and swimwear to swim | The line guests thank you for |
| Food | Lunch, with chaat and gola stalls | Guests know not to eat before they come |
| Reply | Please reply by [Date] | The stalls and the food are ordered by headcount |
Who gets the haldi carnival link
Usually everyone who is invited to the functions gets the carnival too, and it is simply one more card on the invitation, with its own time and dress code.
Two cases are different. If your parents' wider circle is mostly elders who would rather skip a pool party, keep the carnival on the family and friends' link and leave it off theirs. And some guests come only for the carnival: families made 'Only Haldi' links for the guests invited to that alone. Either way, each guest's link shows only the functions that guest is invited to. Our guide to inviting guests to only some functions covers how families split the list.
Sending it on WhatsApp
- With the wedding invitationIf the carnival is on everyone's link, it goes out with the rest of the functions.
- A link of its ownGuests invited only to the carnival get its own link, with a short note from the person who knows them.
- The reminderThe evening before: the time, the colours, 'bring a change of clothes', and the map pin to the right lawn.
Our guide to sending invitations on WhatsApp covers sending to a long list from your own number.
How Invifest does a haldi carnival
Invifest makes invitations and guest management for weddings and every big moment. Our designers make each family its own invitation website, and this is how the carnival sits on it:
- A card of its own. The carnival gets its own card, with its time, its lawn or poolside on a map, its dress code and the one line on what will be there, beside the haldi, the sangeet and the wedding.
- The couple in the carnival's colours. Add a caricature, and our designers draw the two of you from your photographs in the colours of the dress code, so the card matches the day.
- Replies for each function. Guests answer for the carnival on its own, so the caterer and the stalls get the afternoon's number, not the wedding's.
- The right link for each guest. A separate link for each side or guest group keeps the carnival off the links it should not be on. With Aangan, you tick the functions for each guest, send everyone their own invitation from your WhatsApp, and see who is coming to which function.
- Hindi and English on one invitation, so the grandparents and the college friends read the same link in their own language.
- Changes on the same link. If the time moves, the link you already sent updates itself. On our newest invitations you tap the spot and say or type the change.
- Ready in 3 days, or in under 24 hours on request. It opens on any phone from WhatsApp, with no app and no login.

Questions people ask
What is a haldi carnival?
A haldi held as a daytime fair. The family applies the turmeric first, then the afternoon turns into a mela with game stalls, street food, music and often a pool. Families also call it Carnival Haldi, Poolside Haldi & Carnival or Haldi-Mehndi Carnival, or give it a theme name such as The Colour of Us.
What should I write on a haldi carnival invitation?
The name, whose haldi it is, the day and date, a start and an end time, the venue with the exact lawn or poolside, one line on what will be there, the dress code as colours, 'bring a change of clothes', whether lunch is served, and how to reply.
What is the dress code for a haldi carnival?
Whatever colours you choose, given as a palette, not an outfit. Yellow and white is the classic. Families this season also chose pastels, one colour for everyone such as lavender, sunset pinks and peaches, or simply bright colours. Ask guests to bring a change of clothes.
What time should a haldi carnival start?
In the day. The carnivals families described to us ran from early afternoon into the golden hour before sunset. Print an end time too, and if an evening function follows, leave enough of a gap for guests to wash off the turmeric and change.
What games and stalls are there at a haldi carnival?
Common choices are a tug of war between the bride's side and the groom's, game stalls, a photo booth, a bangle bar, a sketch artist, and counters for chaat, gola and candy floss, with a dhol or a DJ. Put on the invitation only what you have actually booked.
Can the haldi and the mehndi be one carnival?
Yes. Families call it a Haldi-Mehndi Carnival and give it one entry on the invitation, with the time of each ritual, one venue and one dress code. Say whether guests can get mehndi done, because they will plan around it.
Should elders be invited to the haldi carnival?
Usually everyone invited to the haldi comes to the carnival. If your parents' wider circle would rather skip a pool party, keep the carnival on the family and friends' link and leave it off theirs.
Can we have a carnival without the haldi?
Yes. Some families hold a day carnival in place of the haldi or the telbaan, and one swapped the turmeric for a 'Petal Shower'. Say on the invitation whether there will be turmeric, so guests know how to dress.
Can guests go into the pool with haldi on?
Ask the venue before you print 'pool party': whether turmeric is allowed in the water, and whether there is a shower beside the pool. Put the answer in the reminder, with a line to bring swimwear and a change of clothes.
How do I send a haldi carnival invitation on WhatsApp?
If everyone is invited, it goes out with the wedding invitation as one more function. Guests invited only to the carnival get a link of its own with a short note. The evening before, send a reminder with the time, the colours, 'bring a change of clothes' and the map pin to the right lawn.
