Wedding invitation without photos: what to use instead, how many are enough, and what if the shoot is late

Why many families send a wedding invitation without photos, what to put instead, how many photos are enough, and what to do when the pre-wedding shoot is late.

In short

A wedding invitation does not need a single photo. A wax seal with your initials, a deity theme, your venues or the two of you drawn can carry it. If you do add photos, 5 or 6 are plenty. If the pre-wedding shoot is not back, send it with engagement or roka photos, or none, and add the gallery to the same link later. Do not fill the gap with AI photos of the two of you.

  9. Questions

Photos come up on nearly half of our calls with families. Some put no photo of the couple on their invitation at all. Others had a pre-wedding shoot that was not back when the invitation had to go out. And several simply asked "kitni photos bhejun?": how many should we send?

Here is what those families did: why they left photos out, what they used instead, how many photos are enough, and what to do when the shoot is late.

Why families leave photos out

Some families gave no reason at all, just "photos nahi lagane", and none is needed. The reasons we did hear:

  • The elders. To many grandparents the wedding card is a patrika, with Ganesh ji and the family's blessings on it, and couple photos do not belong there.
  • The look. The couple's photos were modern and the invitation was traditional, and the two did not sit well together.
  • Who will see it. Relatives who did not know it was a love marriage, and senior colleagues and business contacts on the same link.
  • No shoot. Not every couple has a pre-wedding shoot, and some shoots are not back in time.

What to put on the invitation instead of photos

What families used in place of couple photos
Instead of photosWhat guests seeGood for
A seal with your initialsAn envelope that opens with one tap, your monogram pressed into the waxAny family; it reads like a printed card
A deity themeRadha-Krishna, Shrinathji, Ganesh ji, Shiv-Parvati or Laxmi-Narayan above your namesDevotional families, and the elders
Your venuesA real photo of the hall, the haveli or the lawn behind each functionEvery family: guests also learn the place
Painted art for each functionA scene for the haldi, the mehndi, the sangeet, the mandapWeddings with many functions
The two of you, drawnA caricature made from your photos, or figures not meant to look like youCouples who want to be on it, but not as photos

How many photos to put on an e-invite

If you use photos, 5 or 6 couple photos are the most an invitation needs. More make it long to scroll and slow to open on a weak phone.

  • Number them in the order you want them shown, in the file names or in your message.
  • Send them as files, as a WhatsApp Document or by email, so they are not compressed.
  • Keep real photos in the photo section, apart from the function art and any caricature.
  • Write your own captions, one line each, and do not repeat "forever" under every photo.

If the pre-wedding shoot is not ready

Many families are in this spot. What worked:

  1. Use the photos you haveEngagement or roka photos are fine on a wedding invitation. "Pre-wedding nahi hai, roka ki photos hain" is a sentence we hear, and roka photos work well.
  2. Send now, add the gallery laterSend the invitation with one photo or none, and add the shoot's photos to the same link when they arrive. Anyone who opens it again sees them, and nobody needs a new link.
  3. Or wait a day or twoIf the photographer has promised the photos within two days, holding the send is simpler than changing it.
  4. Do not fill the gap with AI photos of the two of youAn AI-made photo of a couple is not a photo of you. If you want yourselves on it before the shoot, a drawing that does not pretend to be a photo is the honest stand-in.

Photos for some guests, not for others

You do not have to choose between everyone and no one. Families gave their business contacts a link with only the wedding on it and no photos, and kept the gallery on the family's link. The same works for senior colleagues.

Anyone who has a link sees everything on it, so the split has to be made in the links. Our guide to inviting guests to only some functions shows how families divide their list.

How Invifest makes an invitation without photos

  • Designs that need no photo. Sindoori's Traditional theme is for families who say "Blessings first, no photographs, everything in its place", and it opens on a red envelope with your initials on the wax seal. Vrindavan is built around Radha and Krishna, and Pichwai around a Nathdwara painting of Shrinathji.
  • The gallery is yours to leave out. Any section of the invitation can be skipped, the photos included.
  • The two of you, drawn. Our caricature add-on draws you from your photos into every ceremony card, made with AI image tools and finished by our designers. See caricature wedding invitations.
  • Photos later, on the same link. If the shoot arrives after you have sent the invitation, the photos go onto the link you already shared, as a round of changes, and it updates by itself.
  • A link without photos for some guests. A separate link for a group, such as business contacts, with only their functions and no gallery. Or Aangan: every guest gets a personal link with only their functions, sent from your own WhatsApp, and you see who is coming to which function.
  • Ready in 3 days. The first version within 3 days of your complete details for most designs, or in under 24 hours on request, with two rounds of changes included.

Questions people ask

Is it okay to send a wedding invitation without photos?

Yes. Traditional printed cards carried blessings, names and functions, not photos, and many families keep it that way online. This season, roughly one family in seven we spoke to put no couple photo on their invitation at all.

What can I put on a wedding invitation instead of a photo?

A wax seal with your initials, a deity theme such as Radha-Krishna or Ganesh ji, a real photo of each venue, painted art for each function, or the two of you drawn as a caricature.

E-invite ke liye kitni photos bhejni chahiye?

Five or six couple photos at most. More make the invitation long and slow on a weak phone. Number them in the order you want, send them as files, and keep them in the photo section.

Can we use engagement or roka photos on the wedding invitation?

Yes. If there is no pre-wedding shoot, or it is not back yet, engagement or roka photos work well, and so does a single photo, or none.

Our pre-wedding photos are not ready. Should we wait to send the invitation?

Only if they are a day or two away. Otherwise send it now with what you have, or with no photos, and add the shoot to the same link when it arrives.

Can photos be added after the invitation is sent?

On an invitation link, yes: the photos go onto the same link, and everyone who opens it sees them. Nobody needs a new link. At Invifest this is made as a round of changes.

Should we use AI photos of the two of us?

Better not. An AI-made photo is not a photo of you. If you want the two of you on the invitation before the shoot, a drawing such as a caricature, which does not pretend to be a photo, is the honest stand-in.

Can some guests see the invitation without our photos?

Yes, with separate links. Families have given their business contacts a link with only the wedding and no photos, and kept the gallery on the family's link. Anyone who has a link sees everything on it.

Can a wedding invitation video be made without photos?

Yes. A video of an invitation website is made from its own pages, so an invitation without photos becomes a video without photos. Invifest makes a 4K film of your invitation with your song, with a light copy for WhatsApp.

Do you put pictures on wedding invitations?

You can, but you do not have to. On an invitation link, photos usually sit in a gallery near the end, after the functions and the families, so the essentials come first.
