Notes on the table. Kamero's free plan publishes 17 of its 25 designs as a live link, both of its birthday designs among them. InviteMaker lets you try a template free and pay when you are happy, and its refund page says nothing is refunded once the HD video is delivered. Crafty Art's birthday page calls all its birthday templates free, while its plans page limits the free plan to one export a day. Greetings Island, which some lists recommend, would not open for our checker on 27 October, so it is not in the table.

A first birthday
In many families the first birthday is the biggest birthday there will ever be, and it often has two parts: a puja or a ritual in the morning and a party or a meal later. Whatever you make it in, give each part its own time, so nobody arrives for the cake and walks into the puja, or misses the puja they wanted to see. A link with a card for each part does this best; on a single image card, put the two times on separate lines.
- Say who is invited to what. If the puja is for close family and the party for everyone, send the two groups different versions, or two links.
- Call the elders anyway. A grandparent who receives a link on WhatsApp still expects to hear it from you.
- Photographs matter more than design. A first birthday invitation is mostly the baby's photographs, so choose a maker that lets you add several.

A 60th, 75th or 80th
A Shashtipurti or a Sadabhishekam is a ceremony with a muhurat, usually in the morning, followed by a meal, and most of the guests are elders. Make it formal and easy to read: large type, the muhurat time first, the venue with a map, and a phone number to call. Print a few copies for the relatives who will not open a link, and send the link to everyone else.

A surprise party
- Send it one by one, or to a new group that does not include the guest of honour. Never post it in the family group they are in.
- Ask guests not to forward it, in the message itself, and say why.
- Prefer a link to a card. If the plan changes, you correct the link instead of sending a new card that can travel further.
- Leave the guest of honour's photo off the preview if guests open WhatsApp in front of them; a name and a date are enough.

When a free card is enough
For a child's party with classmates and their parents, a free card from Canva, Crafty Art, Adobe Express or Desievite, with the start and end time and a phone number, does the job. For a dinner with ten friends, a message does.
A link earns its place when there are two parts at different times, guests from other cities, elders who need a map, or a headcount for the caterer. Then one link you can correct after sending saves a second round of forwards.
