Cocktail party invitation wording for an Indian wedding: card text, WhatsApp messages and funny lines
Wedding cocktail party invitation wording for the card and WhatsApp, in English, Hindi and Hinglish, with funny lines, dress codes and what to put on it.

A wedding cocktail party invitation says who is hosting, whose wedding it celebrates, and everything about the evening itself: the day and date, the start time, the venue with a map, the dress code and whether dinner is served. Send it with the wedding invitation, or on its own to the guests invited only to that night, and keep any joke kind enough to be forwarded to the elders.

The cocktail night is one of the newer functions at an Indian wedding, and the one with the fewest rules. There is no ritual and no muhurat. Some families hold it with the engagement, some fold it into the sangeet, and some give it a night of its own, often with a different guest list from the pheras.
So the invitation does all the explaining. This page covers what to put on it, the details guests will want to know (the dress code, the bar, the time and the ride home), and wording to copy for a printed card, a WhatsApp message and a funny version, in English, Hindi and Hinglish.
What a wedding cocktail party is, and where it fits
A wedding cocktail party is an evening of drinks, dinner, music and dancing held around the wedding, with no puja and no ceremony in it. Because nothing fixes its day, it can sit almost anywhere in the schedule, and the name on the card changes with where it sits:
| Where it sits | What the card calls it | What to make clear |
|---|---|---|
| Its own night, a day or two before the wedding | Cocktail Night, Cocktail Evening | The date, so nobody mixes it up with the sangeet |
| After the engagement | Engagement, followed by Cocktails and Dinner | That the ring ceremony comes first, and when |
| With the sangeet | Sangeet and Cocktail Night | When the performances start, and when the dance floor opens |
| On the evening of the mehndi or haldi day | Cocktail Night | Enough of a gap to change, and the second venue if there is one |
| After a daytime wedding | Cocktail Party | That it is the same day, and the time it starts |
Families rarely give it an evening alone. This season, many of the invitations families asked us for had a cocktail evening on the card. Most paired it with another function: a 'Ring ceremony and cocktail' evening, a 'Mehndi/Cocktail' night under one name, a 'sangeet cocktail' as a single function. One family gave it a night of its own, two days before the wedding.
If your wedding has no sangeet, the cocktail night is where the dancing happens, and the invitation can say so. That one line tells guests what to wear and how late the night will run.
Who hosts it, and who is invited
Any of three can host: the bride's family, the groom's family, or the couple themselves. At a destination wedding, where both families stay at one venue, it is often a single evening for both sides, so the card can name both families.
Decide the guest list before the wording. Some families invite everyone, grandparents included. Others keep the cocktail for friends, cousins and colleagues, and leave it off the invitation the elders receive. Both are normal. What goes wrong is a guest seeing a function they were not invited to, or an elder walking into a party that was planned for the younger crowd. Our guide to inviting guests to only some functions shows how to keep each list on its own link.
On our calls this season the cocktail was often the function with its own guest list. 'Cocktail mein kisi ko invite, kisi ko nahi', as one family put it: some guests are invited, some are not. One family saved a 'Cocktail + wedding' set in its guest dashboard for the friends who were. The dress code families gave the evening was Indo-western, and they kept it off the parents' links together with the after party. Take the cocktail's dress code off those links too, or the outfit section tells guests about an evening they were not asked to.
What to put on a cocktail party invitation
| Line | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Who is hosting | Mr and Mrs [Surname] invite you, or [Bride's name] and [Groom's name] invite you | Guests know whose party it is and who to reply to |
| What the evening is | Cocktail Night, or Sangeet and Cocktail Night | Use the same name on every card and message |
| Day, date and time | Saturday, [Date], from 7:30 pm | Give a start time, and an end time if the venue sets one |
| Venue | [Lawn or hall], [Venue], with a map link | At a resort, name the lawn, the hall or the poolside |
| Dress code | Indo-western, or Black and gold | Say if it is outdoors, so guests bring a shawl and pick shoes for grass |
| Food | Cocktails and dinner | Guests know not to eat before they come |
| Reply | Please reply by [Date] | The bar and the dinner are ordered by headcount |
| Getting back | Cabs at the gate from 11 pm | Anyone who drinks needs a way home |
On the time: if the party is on an open lawn or a terrace, plan for the music to come down at 10 pm. India's noise rules do not allow loudspeakers in the open between 10 pm and 6 am, a state may relax that till midnight only on a few festive occasions a year, and closed halls such as banquet halls are exempt. Ask the venue which applies to you, then pick a start time that leaves a full evening before the cut-off.
For the dress code itself, our guide to dress codes on the invitation has a line for every function, the cocktail included.
The bar: what to write, and what to check first
- 'Cocktails and dinner' says enough. There is no need to list the drinks or write 'open bar'. A guest reading 'cocktail night' expects a bar.
- If the evening is dry, say so kindly. Call it a mocktail night, or write 'Mocktails, music and dinner', so nobody arrives expecting a bar and nobody who does not drink stays away.
- In Gujarat and Bihar, alcohol is banned. A cocktail evening there is planned with mocktails from the start, and the wording should match.
- Check the licence before the card says 'cocktails'. Many states require a one-day permit from the excise department to serve alcohol at a party, and the venue can be held responsible along with the host. In Delhi it is the P-10 permit, for a banquet hall, a farm or a motel without a liquor licence of its own; in Uttar Pradesh, the FL-11 occasional bar licence; in Maharashtra, a one-day function licence. Ask your venue what it covers before the invitations go out.
- Say how people get home. If cabs, a driver or rooms at the venue are arranged, give it one line. 'Please don't drive if you have been drinking' is a kind way to end the reminder.
Funny cocktail party invitation wording that stays kind
A cocktail invitation is the one place in a wedding where a joke is welcome. Keep it about the couple, the dance floor or the family's keenest dancers, and keep it clean enough to be forwarded to a grandmother, because it will be. Lines that work:
- Pheras are serious. This night is not.
- [Groom's name] has promised to dance. We have witnesses.
- Dress to impress, dance to embarrass.
- Shaadi se pehle ek shaam, sirf masti ke naam.
- Calories don't count tonight. Neither do dance steps.
- The DJ is booked and the uncles are warming up. Only you are missing.
Leave out jokes about drinking too much, about anyone's weight or exes, and the 'last night of freedom' line. They read one way to a friend and another way to a parent, a colleague or the other family. Two full funny versions, one in English and one in Hinglish, are in the wording below.
Sending it on WhatsApp
If every guest is invited to the cocktail, it belongs inside the wedding invitation as one more function, with its own time, venue and dress code. If only some are, send it as its own message to them alone, from the person who knows them: the couple for their friends, a parent for theirs.
Send it with the main invitation, then a short reminder on the morning of the party with the time, the dress code and the map. A message that opens with the guest's name reads as an invitation; a poster forwarded into a group reads as a notice. Our guide to sending invitations on WhatsApp covers sending to a long list from your own number.
Free cocktail party invitation templates, and what they leave out
Free design apps such as Canva have plenty of cocktail templates: glasses, gold confetti, a black background. They give you an image or a PDF, which is enough for a small party among friends. Our list of free invitation makers says which ones let you download without an account or a watermark.
What an image cannot do is the work a wedding cocktail needs: a map guests can tap, a reply form that tells you how many are coming for the bar and dinner, a time you can change after sending, and different functions for different guests. Canva or a designer sets the two side by side.
How Invifest does a cocktail night
Invifest makes invitations and guest management for weddings and every big moment. Our designers make each family its own invitation website, with every function and RSVP on one link, the cocktail night included with its own time, dress code and map. For the cocktail, that means:
- A link with the cocktail, and one without. A separate link for each side or guest group keeps the cocktail and the after party off the parents' links, dress code and all.
- A personal link for every guest. With Aangan, each guest's personal link shows only the functions they are invited to, so the cocktail reaches the guests it is meant for. Save a set such as 'Cocktail + wedding' and give it to the whole friends' group in one go, send everyone their own invitation from your WhatsApp, and see who is coming to which function.
- Replies for each function. Guests answer for the cocktail on its own, so the bar and the dinner are ordered for that evening's headcount.
- Two functions, one evening. A ring ceremony with cocktails, or a mehndi and cocktail night, sits on the invitation as one entry, with the time of each part and one dress code.
- Hindi and English on one invitation, so the elders' link and the friends' link each read right.
- Changes on the same link. If the time or the venue changes, the link you already sent updates itself. On our newest invitations you tap the spot and say or type the change.
- Ready in 3 days, or in under 24 hours on request. It opens on any phone from WhatsApp, with no app and no login.
For the other evenings of the wedding, the Sangeet, Engagement and Sufi night guides have wording of their own.

Questions people ask
What should a cocktail party invitation card say?
Who is hosting, whose wedding it celebrates, what the evening is called, the day, date and start time, the venue with a map, the dress code, whether dinner is served and how to reply. If drinks are served, add one line on how guests get home.
What is a cocktail party in an Indian wedding?
An evening party around the wedding with drinks, dinner, music and dancing, and no ritual. It can be a night of its own, follow the engagement, share an evening with the sangeet, the mehndi or the haldi, or come after a daytime wedding.
When is the cocktail party held in an Indian wedding?
Usually in the last days before the wedding: on its own night, or on the same evening as the engagement, the sangeet or the mehndi. Some families hold it on the evening of a daytime wedding. Where our invitations this season gave a time, it was 7 or 7:30 pm.
How do I write funny cocktail party invitation wording?
Joke about the couple, the dance floor or the family's keenest dancers, not about drinking, weight or exes, and keep it clean enough for the elders, because it will be forwarded. Lines such as 'Pheras are serious. This night is not.' or 'Shaadi se pehle ek shaam, sirf masti ke naam' work well. Two full funny versions are on this page.
What dress code should a cocktail party invitation give?
Whatever you want guests to wear, in one line. Indo-western, cocktail wear, evening wear or a colour theme such as black and gold are common choices. Say if the party is outdoors, so guests plan for grass and the night air.
Should a cocktail party invitation mention alcohol?
'Cocktails and dinner' is enough; there is no need to list drinks or write 'open bar'. If no alcohol will be served, call it a mocktail night so nobody is surprised. In Gujarat and Bihar, where alcohol is banned, it has to be a mocktail night.
Is there a free cocktail party invitation template?
Yes. Free design apps such as Canva have cocktail templates that download as an image or a PDF, which suits a small party. For a wedding with several functions, an invitation link adds a map guests can tap, replies for the headcount, and a time you can change after sending.
How do I send a cocktail party invitation message on WhatsApp?
If everyone is invited, add the cocktail to the wedding invitation as a function of its own. If only some guests are, send it to them separately, starting with their name. On the morning of the party, send a reminder with the time, the dress code and the map.
Can the cocktail party be only for friends?
Yes, and families often do. Give the friends a link with the cocktail on it and the parents' circle a link without it, or give every guest a personal link that shows only their functions. Take the cocktail's dress code off the other link too.
Can the mehndi and the cocktail be on the same evening?
Yes. Families hold a 'Mehndi/Cocktail' night under one name, a ring ceremony followed by cocktails, or a 'sangeet cocktail'. Give it one entry on the invitation, with the time of each part, one venue and one dress code.
